The Birth of Paradise Seeds in 1994 – Police Raids, Setbacks, and a Clever Solution

Paradise Seeds was officially founded in 1994 – though under rather unusual circumstances. After a police raid and the loss of his cultivation sites, Luc’s lawyer advised him to pursue a legal path: establishing a company to produce and sell cannabis seeds. In the Netherlands, the trade of seeds was (and still is) legal. This led to the creation of Paradise Seeds – initially offering five strains, including classics like Dutch Dragon, Amsterdam Flame, and Sheherazade.

For two years, Luc tirelessly refined his genetics while simultaneously building a mail-order business. It was during this time that an Indica named Sensi Star started making waves among breeders. What set it apart? An exceptional resin production and a unique aroma blend of mint, fuel, pepper, and floral notes. It quickly became clear: this was a plant destined for greatness.

The Breakthrough: Cup Wins and International Recognition

In 1998 and 1999, Paradise Seeds participated in cannabis cups for the first time, which at the time were the ultimate platform for gaining worldwide recognition for strains. Among them, the prestigious High Times Cannabis Cup was considered the ultimate accolade. Paradise Seeds went all out in 1998: costumed “Santa” figures handing out Sensi Star buds and Luc himself proudly parading through the cup hall with massive, bushy plants caught the attention of the community.

In 1999, the moment finally arrived: Sensi Star claimed first place at the High Times Cup and also won the Highlife Cup. This achievement catapulted Paradise Seeds into the top league of breeders. At the same time, Nebula secured second place – a double success that firmly established Paradise Seeds on the global stage. As the new millennium began, Paradise Seeds was already a prominent name in the European and American cannabis scenes.

Expanding Abroad: Switzerland, Feminized Seeds, and Autoflowering Innovation

The early 2000s marked a period of experimentation and expansion for Paradise Seeds: The company temporarily relocated to Switzerland, where looser regulations allowed the establishment of large-scale breeding facilities. Although the legal framework soon tightened again, Paradise Seeds was able to conduct significant research and develop new strains (Rox, Swiss Bliss, Sugar Babe, as well as Allkush and Belladonna).

At the same time, Luc began developing feminized seeds. Feminized seeds were still a relatively new concept at the time, but Paradise Seeds quickly recognized their potential: after all, who wouldn’t want the guarantee that every single plant would be female and produce high-yielding flowers? By 2002, the first feminized strains from Paradise Seeds hit the market, including the still-popular Nebula, followed in 2005 by Wappa. Although some purists were initially skeptical, feminized seeds have since become a worldwide standard.

Another milestone was the development of stable autoflowering strains. With Vertigo and Pandora, Paradise Seeds once again demonstrated its innovative spirit.
