Sensi Seeds
Over the decades, Sensi Seeds has established itself as one of the most influential names in the cannabis industry. Behind the company stands the visionary founder Ben Dronkers, who began traveling the world as early as the 1970s, collecting different landraces from Central and Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, and other regions. These global expeditions paved the way for groundbreaking cannabis strains that still set standards today.
The Beginnings of Sensi Seeds
Pioneer and Visionary
In the 1980s, the European cannabis scene changed rapidly. While others still acted cautiously, Sensi Seeds stepped into the spotlight and combined cannabis seed sales with extensive literature on breeding and cultivation. With the opening of its first shop in central Amsterdam in 1986, Ben Dronkers created not only a destination for genetics, but also a platform for growers and cannabis enthusiasts from around the world. Amsterdam thus became the epicenter of a new kind of cannabis movement - and Sensi Seeds and its flagship store were right in the middle of it.
From Landraces, Through Selection, to Cup Winners
The breeding philosophy of Sensi Seeds has always been built on the preservation and refinement of landraces. Because Ben Dronkers encountered a wide range of gene pools during his travels to the Hindu Kush region, Southeast Asia, and various mountainous areas, he was able to create unique hybrids from them. Many of these strains, such as Northern Lights, Jack Herer, or Skunk #1, are now considered absolute classics. Since the late 1980s, the team at Sensi Seeds has regularly collected awards at European cannabis cups; those wins reflect their reputation for stability, strong yields, and great aromatic diversity.
Sensi Seeds also plays a leading role from a medical perspective. Its genetic lines formed, for example, the basis for Dutch pharmacy cannabis projects. When the Dutch government decided to legalize medical cannabis and supply patients through pharmacies, it turned to Sensi Seeds genetics because they had proven to be stable, reproducible, and high quality. Beyond that, Ben Dronkers committed himself to the research and normalization of cannabis - which, among other things, led to his induction into the High Times Counterculture Hall of Fame in 2013.
Collaborations, New Strains, and Global Presence
Breeding and Innovation
The drive to unlock new breeding potential and launch collaborative projects also led to the “Breeding Grounds” label. Here, Sensi Seeds now works with breeder teams from all over the world, including Humboldt Seed Company, Sherbinski, Champelli, Fat Beans, and Serge Cannabis. The goal is to develop new, innovative strains. These partner projects often produce varieties that combine the best of different worlds.
The Sensi Seeds Research line shows how open these breeders are to new cannabinoid and terpene profiles. Hybrids regularly appear in which, for example, classic indicas have been crossed with modern US genetics. Examples include strains such as Cosmic Kiss Feminized (Bacio x Rainbow Belts 2.0) or Sweet & Sour Cream Automatic (Sour Florida OG x Gelato #420). The focus here is often on a combination of spicy, fruity aromas and a balanced indica-sativa effect.
Another core part of Sensi Seeds is its commitment to culture and education. Back in 1985, Ben Dronkers and Ed Rosenthal founded the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Amsterdam, which to this day presents the history, uses, and biology of cannabis and hemp across multiple locations. Among them is a branch in Barcelona, the Palau Mornau, located in the Gothic Quarter and considered an architectural treasure of the city. Closely intertwined with the activities of Sensi Seeds, the museum has become an important information hub for visitors from all over the world.
The collaboration with other organizations such as the Cannabis College and the Hemp Museum Gallery, as well as the commitment to industrial hemp projects (e.g. through HempFlax), shows the foresight of Sensi Seeds. They do not view cannabis only as an intoxicant or medicinal plant, but as a sustainable resource for textiles, paper, building materials, and much more. This drive toward a holistic recognition of hemp and marijuana shapes the brand: to understand, protect, and continuously develop the plant’s diversity.
With every new strain, whether developed independently or in collaboration (“Breeding Grounds”), Sensi Seeds focuses on quality and stability. This is the result of nearly 40 years of breeding experience. Even though the company has long since gone global, Amsterdam remains the core of its identity. It was from here that Ben Dronkers launched his first shop on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal - a combination of genetics store and grow equipment shop that was groundbreaking at the time.
Secret of Eden - because we love stories, passion, and genuine quality products.
The future is being shaped by projects such as the new Breeding Grounds program, in which collaborative lines are created to cover different phenotypes and cannabinoid spectra. Strains like Purple Berry Muffinz (Zkittlez x Blueberry Muffin x Purple Bud) or Pineapple Kush Cake Auto (Banana Kush Cake Auto x Pineapple Muffin Auto) show just how creative breeding can be today.
Sensi Seeds represents the pioneer history of the European cannabis scene. From a handful of landrace crosses, a brand emerged over decades that has influenced countless modern strains. Hardly any other company has done so much for the preservation and distribution of cannabis genetics as Sensi Seeds. In its roots, established in central Amsterdam since 1986, the connection between tradition and innovation is reflected - a cornerstone that makes Sensi Seeds one of the most important players in the global seedbank and breeding landscape.
